No one knows the real cause of autism – this is a fact. Similarly, there is no specific treatment option which can claim a complete cure for autism.
There are many theories and working hypotheses about the aetiology of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD, clinically, is a heterogeneous condition. The conventional medical system characterises ASD by measuring deficits in socialisation, communication and behaviour traits of an autistic person with a wide range of neurological basis of the severity of symptoms.
Therefore, to treat neurological abnormalities and behavioural symptoms associated with ASD, the conventional medical system uses psychotropic medications. These include serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), antipsychotics and drugs used to treat ADHD. The overall analysis of the efficacy of SRIs proves that SRIs are less efficacious and more poorly tolerated in children with ASD compared with adults .
Furthermore, SSRIs drugs carry a considerable risk of excessive stimulation or activation, even hypomania or mania in children and adults . Don’t forget these drugs carry toxic side effects as well!
Contrary to the conventional viewpoint, there are a huge number of scientific studies which categorically connect mental symptoms of autism with the physical pathological system. For example, autoimmunity disorder, nutritional deficiencies, and other biological defects caused by ecological factors have a strong association with neurological defects in ASD .
Ecological factors, nutritional deficiencies, autoimmune disorders and biological defects are totally being ignored by conventional system of medicine in the case of vast array of childhood disease syndrome, like Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and its different forms, Eating disorders, Anxiety disorders, Mood disorders, Schizophrenia and Vaccine Damage Syndrome (VDS) etc. This neglect in the conventional medical system is not due to an oversight; rather it is due to lack of specific medicines to treat such complex disease syndromes.
Parents of autistic children and adult patients suffering from autism should realise that there are other non-invasive natural treatment methods available. These unconventional treatment methods target both mental and physical domains of autistic patients, to correct the symptoms of autistic spectrum disorder and to maintain a healthy lifestyle without the use of the pharma drugs and their toxic side effects. These natural treatment options include orthomolecular medicines, nutritional therapy, homoeopathy and herbal medicines.
Such natural treatment methods when used expertly, work synergistically to help gradually clear the symptoms of autistic spectrum disorder or least can control such disorders in their track.
Since autism is a syndrome (a complex combination of psychosomatic symptoms), one single treatment method cannot guarantee to cover and treat all the symptoms, simultaneously occurring in the multiple (i.e. mental and physical) domains of an autistic patient.
Progressive Alleviation of Childhood Ecological Disorder (PACED) therapy is a treatment method which can be adopted due to its versatility in many different conditions including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and its different forms, Eating disorders, Anxiety disorders, Mood disorders, Schizophrenia and Vaccine Damage Syndrome (VDS) etc.
The philosophy behind PACED therapy is this: in order to tackle a multi-faceted disease syndrome causing a complex set of symptoms – which are manifested simultaneously in the mental and physical domain of a patient – a therapeutic method should be multi-faceted as well, to be able to treat all the possible symptoms progressively, synergistically, without causing any harm to the patient.
This article details the rationale that underpins the use of PACED therapy in case of ASD. PACED therapy encompasses all the vital aspects of the natural treatment options for the treatment of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). From the very onset, readers should be very clear about the fact that no claim whatsoever is being made that PACED therapy can cure ASD or other diseases. This is only a treatment method which can be used like many other conventional and nonconventional approaches to treat the symptoms of ASD and other childhood diseases.
Key features of PACED therapy:
- Detoxification Process
- Fulfilment of deficiencies
- Repair of Broken Links
- PACED Therapy Progress Evaluation.
Let us examine these key features in the light of medical research for a viable use of PACED therapy in case of autism, assuming that a person has been clinically diagnosed with ASD.
- Detoxification Process:
A system clogged with toxins such as heavy metals, junk food additives, toxins due to use of pharma drugs, other ecological factors including toxins in the ingredients of vaccines and parts of their bacterial and viral ingredients (live or inactivated), is in urgent need of the most appropriate detoxification process, to eliminate the toxic effects and to avoid further damage to the system.
Before the detoxification process is initiated in PACED therapy, the presence of heavy metal toxicity is confirmed through blood/urine tests or via hair mineral analysis test, from reputable bio-labs.
Thimerosal (or Thiomersal) is a trading name for an organomercurial compound (sodium ethyl-mercury (Hg) thiosalicylate) that is 49.55% mercury (Hg) by weight. It has been and is still being used as a preservative in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals for topical use and other drug products including vaccines. In the UK, thimerosal was being used in the vaccines until 2005, and it was being used in the swine flu vaccine until 2011. It is still being used in the vaccines in many other countries of the world. There is a huge research data which categorically proves mercury in any form is toxic to the cells and is dangerous to health . A minute level of thimerosal in humans’ body is poisonous and cause a plethora of deleterious consequences . Besides vaccines mercury enters into the human body from dental fillings, food; in the form of fish, preservatives, fungicides, antiseptics, odour remover sprays, disinfectants etc.
It is not only mercury which is a culprit in the case of autism. Aluminium is another metal which wreaks havoc in the brains of autistic persons. The content of aluminium remains consistently high in the white and grey matter of the brains of autistic patients . Vaccines carry aluminium as well!
Another cause of the neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood exposure to the heavy metal lead. Childhood lead poisoning has deleterious effects on the development of widespread brain areas including those implicated in cognitive, communication, and social functioning .
In research carried out on autistic children in Egypt, the levels of mercury, lead and aluminium were found to be higher in their hair samples than healthy controls . Similarly, finding a high level of chloride in the brain tissue of autistic children, scientists believe these could be responsible for tipping the brain of a newborn on the path towards autistic development .
So far one can see that heavy metal toxicity plays a deleterious role in the case of autism, and the same is true in case of many other health issues.
Now the natural question arises since there are numerous research papers which prove the presence of a higher level of these toxic metals in the brains and body tissues of autistic people. What feasible method conventional system of medicine offers to detoxify and eliminate these toxins from the bodies of autistic patients? The plain truth is conventional medicine has nothing to offer to initiate the detoxification process. Since there is nothing there in the medicine chest of conventional medicines, the pro pharma conventional medical scientists put their efforts to prove that these toxic substances, especially in vaccines, are not dangerous for the human economy.
At this juncture, it is important to inform the readers that in the conventional medical system a chelation method, called EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), is used for detoxification purpose but this method is not safe for children, and not safe for adults either with certain health issues . EDTA due to its safety issues is not popular at all. Therefore, practically there is no option to detoxify a system from heavy metal toxicity with conventional intervention.
The first line of support in PACED therapy, in this regard, comes from homeopathy. The philosophy of the application of homeopathic remedies is very simple. Homeopathic remedies work on the basis of the principle “like cures like”. It means, if a material dose of a substance is capable to produce symptoms of a disease in a healthy person, the highly diluted form of the same substance is capable to cure these symptoms in a sick person.
Let’s look at the symptoms of mercury poisoning or toxicity. These include: mood swings, nervousness, irritability, and other emotional changes, muscle twitching, tremors, weakness, muscle atrophy, muscle atrophy, decreased cognitive functions, loss of coordination, impairments of speech and hearing, diarrhoea, anxiety, depression, memory loss, excessive shyness, irritability, rash, fever, irritability, splenomegaly etc. .
These are mercury toxicity symptoms, caused by material dose (high level) of mercury in the system. When such symptoms are treated in homeopathy, simple logic, as per homeopathic principle stated above, is to use the highly diluted form of mercury for the patient who is suffering from these symptoms.
In homeopathic pharmacopoeia, for nearly 200 years, there has been a homeopathic remedy called MERCURIUS SOLUBILIS. When we read about this remedy in any authentic homeopathic Materia Medica (a book which outlines the origin/character of a remedy and the disease symptoms it is capable to cure), there are striking similarities in the symptoms, given above, of mercury toxicity and in the symptoms this very remedy is capable to treat.
For example, we can read about MERCURIUS SOLUBILIS in the homeopathic Materia Medica by William BOERICKE, M.D. It states that this remedy can treat a long list of symptoms, including the following symptoms as well: Slow in answering questions, Memory weakened, and loss of will-power, Weary of life, Mistrustful, Thinks he is losing his reason, headaches, eye irritation, eruption, otalgia, yellow discharge from ear, sticking pain, Salivary secretions greatly increased, Bluish-red swelling of throat, Weak digestion, abdominal pains and aches, sick stomach, colic, whitish-grey or greenish stools, Cough, with yellow muco-purulent expectoration aggravated at night, itching worse from warmth of bed etc.
Aren’t these mental and physical symptoms of an autistic person? Yes, these are! But remember these are the symptoms of mercury toxicity too in conventional medical literature, due to high levels of mercury in the body.
So, the point here to remember is this: there is a nontoxic, side-effect-free homeopathic remedy to initiate detoxification / chelating process due to the high level of mercury.
The same is true for other heavy metal toxic substances like lead, aluminium and chlorine , there is a correspondence remedy to treat their toxicity symptoms, in homeopathic list of remedies.
In order to prove the fact that homeopathic remedies can detoxify such toxic elements a research paper from Brazil is presented, in which high dilution (this is homeopathy) mercury was used as a chelating agent. In this research, 52 patients were evaluated and clinically diagnosed for overload of mercury toxicity. They had been selected and distributed blindly at random in 2 groups, Placebo and Mercurius Solubilis. By the end of the treatment, a significant mercury hair level reduction was noted, in those individuals treated with homeopathic medication Mercurius Solubilis. This study showed that homeopathic remedy Mercurius Solubilis was effective in treating mercury contamination/toxicity, without collateral effects as chemical agents .
Humans have always been exposed to a wide range of toxic substances, also known as xenobiotics. To avoid damage by these toxins, the human body has evolved a set of enzymes that play an important role in counteracting them. The enzymes are included in the cytochrome P450 system. One of the most important members of the cytochrome P450 system is an enzyme encoded by the gene CYP2D6. The CYP2D6 is one of the most important enzymes that play a part in the initial stages of toxin neutralisation. In PACED therapy, a Sequence-Specific Homeopathic DNA (SSHD) molecule remedy is used to target the CYP2D6 gene, to promote its efficiency. Thus, improving and optimising the natural detoxification process of the body . This is a drug-free approach to optimise and maintain the natural detoxification process.
- Fulfilment of Deficiencies:
Autism is a complex syndrome; in many studies, an autistic person is found to have multiple nutritional deficiencies. For example, Autistic children and adult patients are found to be deficient in vitamin D3, vitamin A and their deficiency exacerbate the symptoms of autism . In another study, Gau M et al. compared the blood samples for nutritional deficiencies of 274 children suffering from autism with 97 healthy counterparts of the same age group. They found that children suffering from autism were significantly deficient in vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc .
It is also found that vitamin B6 and magnesium when used together, alleviate the symptoms of autism rather than when used individually . In a study, when vitamin B6 supplement was withdrawn from the diet plan of autistic children, their symptoms deteriorated significantly indicating that vitamin B6 is an important supplement in the treatment of autism . Use of an omega 3 supplement may also improve the symptoms of autistic spectrum disorder .
Children suffering from ADHD or ASD have low levels of EPA, DHA and AA . Finally, in a study in which scientists treated autistic patients for 12 months with EPA, DHA, carnitine, and vitamins A, B2, B5, B6, B12, folic acid, and Coenzyme Q10, they found major improvements in the symptoms of the treatment group versus non-treatment group . ASD children are also deficient on glutathione, a master detoxifier and mother of all antioxidants in the body. Reduced activity of the gene GSTM1 slows down the synthesis of glutathione in the system. In the PACED therapy, a specific SSHD remedy is used to promote the action of GTSM1 gene to increase the level of glutathione in the body, naturally .
On the basis of these facts that autistic children and adults are deficient in certain micronutrients if their nutritional deficiencies are adequately fulfilled, such intervention can bring about a positive change and improvement in the health of autistic patients. In PACED therapy orthomolecular medicines practice is employed to fulfil such deficiencies.
- Repair of Broken Links
An autistic child simultaneously suffers from many pathological symptoms along with neurological disorder reflected by behavioural issues. There may be an existing pathology responsible for neurological symptoms in the form of brain allergy. Autistic sufferers suffer from neuroimmune dysfunction .
“Brain mast cells are found primarily in the hypothalamus, which participates in the regulation of behaviour and language. Corticotropin-releasing hormone is secreted from the hypothalamus under stress and, together with neurotensin, stimulates brain mast cells that could result in focal brain allergy and neurotoxicity. Neurotensin is significantly increased in serum of children with ASD and stimulates mast cell secretion of mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and DNA, which is increased in these children; these mitochondrial components are misconstrued as innate pathogens, triggering an antiallergic response in the brain” in people suffering from ASD.
The leaky gut syndrome is another autism-related pathology, which is denied by the conventional system of medicine but on the other hand, there are numerous studies which prove the fact that permeability of gut is increased in case of autistic patients . In order to repair a damaged gut use of glutamine is highly recommended in various clinical studies .
Leaky gut syndrome, brain allergy due to the dysfunctional immune system are all broken links of brain and body in case of ASD and other childhood neurological disorders. In order to treat an autistic child in PACED therapy, all these broken links are taken into consideration with non-invasive, nontoxic therapeutic agents including Sequence-Specific Homeopathic DNA (SSHD) remedies, a drug-free approach, to tackle disease symptoms .
Dr Hyman has discovered that low levels of glutathione are found in nearly all sick patients. In one of his articles, he has called glutathione master detoxifier and mother of all antioxidants . Decreased levels of glutathione and increased level of nasty substance homocysteine are also found in the bodies of autistic children and adult patients .
The GSTM1 is one of the most important genes needed for recycling glutathione in the body when it has been used. The function of gene GSTM1 is decreased in all sick people. In PACED therapy, a specific SSHD remedy is used to promote the action of GTSM1 gene to increase the level of glutathione in the body naturally .
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is an enzyme that is encoded by the gene MTHFR. The MTHFR gene product plays an important role in the conversion of 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. This conversion reaction, which requires adequate intake of vitamin B12 and folate, is required for the multistep process that converts the amino acid homocysteine back to another amino acid, methionine.
Decreased activity of MTHFR gene leads to inefficient conversion of homocysteine to methionine. This leads to a build-up of homocysteine in the blood. In order to kerb the increased amount of Homocysteine levels and increase the efficiency of MTHFR, a specific SSHD remedy is used in the PACED therapy to target the MTHFR gene . These are the ways to reconnect the broken links in the case of ASD and other neurological disorders and with the help of PACED therapy.
- PACED Therapy Progress Evaluation
Every therapeutic method needs to be evaluated for the verification of prognostic parameters and overall effectiveness of the treatment at regular intervals, during and at the completion of the treatment. Effectiveness of PACED therapy is also measured at regular intervals at each follow-up appointment during the course of the treatment and finally at the completion of the treatment.
In order to gauge the effectiveness of the PACED therapy, different lab tests are advised, as and when needed, along with the Autism Evaluation Check List (ATEC) test is carried out.
